Q. What is Steps for Students?
Steps for Students is an annual event benefiting the 56 Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Galveston- Houston.  Over the last 15 years, this exciting day of family fun has brought together our Catholic community for a sunrise Mass, sanctioned 5K race, and a post-race party in the Catholic School Village.  In 2020, over 9,600 people registered for the race, and over $980,000 was raised to fund the unique needs of each of our Catholic schools.  Unfortunately, the global pandemic has kept us from gathering in person in 2021, but you can still support Catholic education by participating in the virtual event!


Q. When is Steps for Students?
The 16th annual race begins on February 20, 2021. You will have 2 weeks to get your virtual run done and submit results.


Q. What does Steps for Students support?
Registrants have the opportunity to join a school team and solicit donations on the school’s behalf. Any undesignated registration fees or pledges support the Archdiocesan Tuition Assistance Program, which is a commitment that the Archdiocese makes to keep Catholic schools accessible, available, and affordable to all families. This commitment is the hallmark of our faith and service in regards to the educational mission of the Church. With 56 schools, the network of Catholic Schools is the largest private school system in the state of Texas.


Q. How have schools used their Steps for Students funds?
The funds raised through Steps for Students may be designated to address the priorities of each school as determined by the principal. Some schools use their funds to provide tuition assistance to families in need while others choose to improve their technology and facilities. In addition, some schools realize they have been blessed and decide to share their blessings by adopting a school in need to be the beneficiary of their funds. If you are unsure of how your school plans to use the money raised through Steps for Students, contact the school office.

 

Q. What kind of swag do we get for a virtual event?

Runners who register for the Virtual 5K will receive a t-shirt, medal, bib, and RaceJoy app.  Those that register for the Hit the Snooze for Students will receive a t-shirt only.


Q. When is packet pickup?

Packets will be boxed together for each school and available for pick up the week before the event. You may choose to have your packet mailed to you for an extra $10. More details will be provided as they become available.


Q. What is a virtual event?
Our virtual event is set up so you can run your distance anytime you want and anywhere you want. Each school will decide how to make it their own event. You will be able to submit your results starting at  8:00 am on February 20, 2021 and have until March 6, 2021 to get those results posted.


Q. Where should I park?
Since this event is virtual this year, you can park wherever you run your own course.

 

Q. I have a student at more than one school. How do I Fundraise for more than one school?

Each registration transaction can only have one Fundraising Team so you will need to split your registrations up to choose different Teams. Example: Mother and son register together and choose Fundraising Team A and then checkout together. In a second transaction, Dad and daughter register together and choose Fundraising Team B and then checkout together. 

 

Q. What is RaceJoy?

RaceJoy is an experiential app that will make your virtual run more enjoyable. The app will track your progress and give you mileage alerts along your course. Your friends and family can download the app and track you on your run, as well as, send you Cheers through the app. We are providing RaceJoy free to all our participants.


Q. Where will my school be located in the Catholic School Village?

There will be no Catholic School Village this year but we have some cool stuff planned for the schools.

 

Q. My schedule has changed and I cannot attend Steps for Students. Can I get a refund or transfer my registration to another runner?
If you are unable to attend the race, thank you for your donation. Refunds will not be issued. If you would like to transfer your registration to another runner, please use the Contact Form under the Race Info tab or send an email to steps4studentshelp@gmail.com


Q. What happens if it rains on race day?
The beauty of a virtual event is that you get to run when it is convenient for you.


Q. Can I bring my pet to the race?
Pets make everything better; however, they are not allowed at school.


Q. Are strollers allowed?
Of course! This is a family race and we welcome people of all ages. Participants with strollers will line up at the back behind walkers to ensure that everyone is safe.

Q. What is RunSignUp?
RunSignUp is a registration and fundraising platform that helps nonprofits to raise money, engage donors and manage volunteers quickly and efficiently. RunSignUp is used by over 15,000 organizations around the country.


Q. Do I need to create an account with RunSignUp?
Yes. The benefits of creating an account include having your tax receipts collected in one location, being able to track your donations, follow the charities you support, and engage in future volunteering and donations. Your tax receipt is emailed immediately upon processing your donation. To claim a donation as a deduction on U.S. taxes, you should retain the donation receipt as an official record.
